Surgery and Surgical Specialties

Surgery education is embedded throughout the four years of curriculum within VCOM. Surgical conditions and procedures are part of the clinical medicine curriculum in each block. Surgical topics within the clinical medicine course include those in general surgery, gastro-intestinal disorders, orthopedics, urology, opthamology, and otorhinolaryngology. Students complete a general surgery rotation in the OMS3 year core curriculum. During your surgical rotation, you will be taught how to assess a patient rapidly, order and interpret diagnostic studies, develop a differential diagnosis, and determine if the patient is a surgical candidate. The medical student is expected to understand the embryology, anatomy, the execution of the surgical procedure and the potential risks and complications. And just as important, the student must be compassionate to the surgical patient and their family.

In the OMS4 year students make complete surgical specialty rotations as a part of their electives and surgical selectives requirements.

The surgery core faculty are composed of many excellent clinical faculty preceptors who will not only teach you sound surgical principles but also serve as role models.

The core surgery rotation is rigorous and requires early arrival to the hospital and may require extended hours on call for emergencies. Surgical logs are required of all students. The surgical chair is available to advise students on elective and surgical selective choices as well as residency. Orthopedic faculty are also available to students interested in an orthopedic career.

For orthopedics, neuro-surgery, urology, ENT, opthamology, and other surgical sub-specialties please visit the 4th year surgical selectives.
